Sad to see this happen. Admittedly I haven’t really looked at the Transit yet however my friends at Accelerated Media are producing a few for the ENG market already.
Free TV….!
by Jim on Jan.25, 2012, under Legal
Ok….so that may have been a cheap ploy to get you to look at the article but this is really another reminder that you’re local TV channels ARE available to you (in most cases) for free! It is ever-so relevant today as we DirecTV customers in the Boston/New Hampshire area are without our local NBC affiliate, and possibly the upcoming Super Bowl, thanks to a retransmission dispute between the aforementioned satellite provider and the parent company of WHDH, Sunbeam Television. This is happening with almost all Sunbeam affiliates around the country.
Sen Scott Brown (R-MA) said it best when he said to both parties “I am concerned that my constituents in Boston have become leverage in a business negotiation,” wrote Brown. “I am not seeking to intervene in a private business transaction, but I do believe that my constituents should have access to television programming that they previously have had access to and have come to expect. It is outrageous that subscribers would pay hundreds of dollars a year for service and not get to watch the Super Bowl, the biggest television event of the year.”
What needs to be said to his constituents is that, especially in the Western Massachusetts area, WHDH is available to them FOR FREE!! Always has been. They simply need to have an adequate antenna. Remember those? When I was growing up, just this side of the stone age and right after the discovery of electricity, almost every house on the street had an antenna of some form, on the roof, or just to the side. These days, people say “I don’t want that ugly thing on MY house”….but for some reason they forgot, or lost sight of the fact that those little things really became invisible after they were up for a couple of weeks. (Think back to your childhood, if you’re older than 30, and try to remember how many antennas you actually remember seeing on your neighbor’s houses.)
For those of us here in New Hampshire….well we’re a lot like the area I grew up in, south of Cleveland, Ohio….we’re going to have to use an outdoor antenna. Its just too far to expect a pair of rabbit ears (or loop) to pick up the stations coming out of Boston. (And if you need one installed….email me….I know a couple of reputable companies here that will take care of you at a reasonable price.) Oh sure, there’s a chance that this dispute will be resolved. There’s also a few people that will pay the fees and stream the game online from the NFL (if its available, I haven’t even looked into that), but I ask…..why?! Its out there already…and its free!

SBE Chapter 110 Meeting Reminder – Jan 25, 2012!
by Jim on Jan.18, 2012, under SBE
Hi Folks
Just sending out the reminder that the next Engineering / SBE Chapter meeting will be held next Wednesday, January 25 at our usual meeting place – Fratello’s in Manchester. The address is:
155 Dow Street – Manchester, NH
This will be another free-form meeting however I’d like to cover a bit about the primaries. How we all fared, any issues that may have come up regarding frequencies (that I wasn’t aware of). I’d also like to discuss a coordination request from BAE for multiple frequencies from 200Mhz through 70Ghz (Yep….I said 70 GIGahertz!).
I hope to see you all there! Please email me with your RSVP so that I can let them know how many to expect.

Senators object to House spectrum bill – Radio & Television Business Report.
I’d feel better about giving the Commission the “fluidity” that the committee speaks of if I didn’t feel that it (the FCC) was being driven by a political agenda more than anything else.
I certainly don’t keep my finger on the pulse of the day-to-day activities of the FCC, but everything I’ve seen for the last 3 years or so looks as if its been the result of lobbying efforts by the telecommunication industry. They don’t seem to be looking at thing from a true Engineering and Economic perspective. There has been plenty of data handed to the Commission by groups like NAB and the Coalition for Free TV that demonstrate how broadcasters could actively assist in Broadband distribution without giving up spectrum, and incurring the expenses as a result.
Just my 2 cents……
Turnkey Studio/Commercial Insertion for LPTV and Access!
by Jim on Jan.09, 2012, under Design and Concepts
Over the last year or so, I’ve had several inquiries about the costs and equipment required to convert the studios of LPTV and Access stations to digital. As you can imagine, this is a pretty broad question that requires a bit of Q&A between myself and the customer before we can develop an equipment list, however I think its time someone put together a “package” of equipment and an approximate cost.
Take a look at this:
This is a basic package which includes:
- PlayReady commercial insertion server and automation
- 16 in and 8 out video router
- Single satellite receive package
- Digital video camera
- 5 input production switcher
- Mac Book Pro with Final Cut Pro Editing software
- Winstead furniture for support of package
- EAS Receiver
Options offered:
- Downstream graphics insertion package (Branding, EAS Crawls, Etc)
- Graphics Generator for production switcher
- Low cost Traffic and Billing system
- Transmitter or cable system interface equipment
- A selection of digital HDTV transmitters
- Many more options available!
The price of the basic package is about $125,000 installed*. The playlist/automation software included in this package provides hands-free operation and interfaces with almost all existing traffic and billing systems. Installation and materials are also included. Want to substitute any of the components? No problem, lets talk about what you want!
This is everything you need to build a state-of-the-art LPTV or Access station! Give us a call 603-668-4320 and we’ll be happy to talk specifics.
* Does not include travel and expenses
Satellite Training for Two Sinclair Stations!
by Jim on Dec.20, 2011, under Operator Training
Last week, I had the pleasure of doing satellite uplink and truck-specific training for two Sinclair Broadcasting stations.
WCHS in Charleston, WV and WZTV in Nashville, TN recently took delivery of two DSENG Sprinters from Accelerated Media Technologies. These vehicles were based on the Sprinter “Mini” chassis and contain a 1.2m Vertex carbon fiber antenna powered by Advantech SSPAs. The antennas are controlled with RCI’s 3000-series controllers with GPS, Compass and RF receiver for auto-aquire functionality. Encoding in these trucks is done with an Adtec EN-80 encoder with an RD-60 as its receive compliment. Independent feeds for the satellite, microwave and editing systems is accomplished with an AJA “KUMO” 16×16 SDI router.
These trucks were a first for both stations, neither of which had an SNG vehicle at their disposal before this and so the training centered on a version of a course I call “Satellite Uplinking 101″. This training is designed to take a new operator and introduce them to the world of uplinking. As I’ve mentioned in other posts on this subject, the general station model for truck operators has largely changed to the photog/operator model, as was the case with these two stations.
At both stations, the first thing I had to do was set up the antenna controller, encoder and IRD to “wake up” in a configuration that made getting the truck ready for an uplink on Sinclair satellite space a relatively simple process. In the process we found that Telemundo has a 24/7 feed on SES-2, in the clear and so we use that as our “check”, along with the installed spectrum monitor to verify being on the correct bird.
The training was performed over a two-day period. I would take groups of 3 or 4 students and walk through the vehicle, explaining the systems. Once I was sure they understood the basics it was time to walk them through an actual uplink, explaining every step before or as it was taken. The next couple of hours was spent walking each one of the students through an the process, one at a time, while their “classmates” looked on. Where possible I like to have each student start with a cold truck, hand them the keys and have the drive to a spot somewhere in the parking lot, or the neighborhood if possible. Then I have them go through each step, from starting the generator and setting jacks, to uplink to a complete strike of the scene. Once complete I hand the keys to the next operator and have them go through the same process. Moving the vehicle, of course, lets them see how the antenna has to respond to each situation.
Obviously one uplink doesn’t make them fully ready to run out and do SNG, but it does give them an idea of what they’re up against and the process involved in getting a shot on the air. This batch of students, from both stations were excellent! I should mention that the training included a larger block of time that was dedicated to training the station Engineers on the process, and going over the vehicle systems in general. Again, a pleasure to have had the opportunity!
If your crew needs training, give us a call! These courses are always tailored to the stations specific needs and we’ll be happy to send you a quote!
